In fact, on Valentine's Day a few years ago a friend and I were held up at gunpoint. Suffice it to say, it wasn't a very pleasant experience. But Valentine's Day should be wonderful! It's a day of love! It should be one of the most beautiful days of the year! So, my Valentine's mission each year is to brighten others' Valentine's!
Today I made cinnamon rolls with red sprinkles. I tried to find heart shaped sprinkles but was unable to do so. I also made chocolate kiss cookies with a drizzled raspberry glaze. Both are heavenly! I'm SO looking forward to delivering them to their various recipients tomorrow! Some will be hand delivered and some will be doorbell-ditched. I can't wait!
Everyone should feel loved on Valentine's Day!

If by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; There is so much to do in both countries, I don't know where I would begin but I want to do it soon! While in Greece I would like to go to the town I share a name with. It's on the island of Leros. From the pictures I've seen online, it's absolutely gorgeous! (Above are some I found online.) When I go to a Chinese restaurant I selectively choose which cookie fortune should be mine. Fortune cookies taste all right but the fortune is the best part! I used to tape all fortunes in my journal. They're just so much fun! The most recent fortune I received said, "Your road to glory will be rocky, but fulfilling."
Thanks to Groupon I recently became acquainted with fancyfortunecookies.com. I didn't do the Groupon because I don't have an event to order lots of fortune cookies for but I think it's an awesome idea. I can't get enough! Friday I didn't work which was both good and bad (good because it gave me plenty of time to cook and bad because it means I don't get paid). After waking up, going to the gym, and getting ready for the day, I began to cook. First I made some incredibly delicious chocolate chip cookies. (I was having company over that evening and wanted to have a dessert.) Then I made honey whole wheat bread. I love the particular recipe I recently acquired and had a yearning to make bread! Then I began with the Indian cuisine I was serving that evening. I prepared the chicken so it could have adequate time to marinate, and then began the Indian bread (Naan). While the bread was doing its thing I prepared a cucumber raita. It turned out mighty fine, if I might say so myself! Indian evening was a huge success! My friends LOVED it! And I had forgotten how much I love chicken masala! It was to die for!
Saturday I wanted to use the rest of the heavy cream I had purchased to make the chicken masala so I decided to make mint truffle brownies with a chocolate ganache! They were also pretty tasty! One friend even went as far as to say that they were the best brownies she ever had! Wow! That's quite the compliment!
In the coming weeks I'm going to hone my cupcake decorating skills. I've always wanted to take a cake decorating class which to date hasn't occurred but I did recently purchase an incredible cupcake decorating book which has some absolutely incredible and creative ideas! I'm super excited to try them! It looks like my friends and neighbors will be the benefactors of many cupcakes!

Pure Love of Winter

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TUSzoRC2YlI/AAAAAAAAAMU/ZnZDmM-1_LU/s320/IMGP6147.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5567772543688270418" />
Winter is such a beautiful time of year! I thoroughly enjoy most oriental foods. I particularly love recipes with a little pizazz. The ingredients in this recipe sounded like they'd do the trick, so I was stoked to say the least! I had most of the ingredients. I made a trip to the grocery store for lemon grass, cabbage, and bean sprouts. At grocery store number one, I found cabbage and bean sprouts. At store number two, no lemon grass. And store number three, no lemon grass! What?! I realize not everyone cooks with lemon grass but are you serious; three major grocery stores and no lemon grass?!?! In complete frustration of not being able to find lemon grass (and not being willing to hit up a fourth) I made the soup without lemon grass. And guess what?! It was divine!!! Yay for Hot and Sour Chicken Cabbage Soup!!! It was a success even without the lemon grass!

Food!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TSo1KaUYJzI/AAAAAAAAAL0/ggDkz7J2wao/s320/IMGP6038.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560315142922053426" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TSo1KDKMwpI/AAAAAAAAALs/wQR44uhxC6s/s320/IMGP5387.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560315136705348242" />
I LOVE to cook! Cooking is relaxing to me; it's soothing. Lately I have been in a soup and bread making mood, probably due to the cold weather. However, most soups don't look that great in picture form so I haven't included any pictures.
I've made a few stews and wide variety of asian soups. The next recipe on the agenda is Hot and Sour Chicken Cabbage Soup. I'm really excited for this new adventure! I choose recipes by the ingredients. Some of the ingredients in my next soup include: hot pepper flakes, vinegar, soy sauce, lemon grass, fish sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, bean sprouts, and onion. Doesn't that sound like an incredible combination?!
The pictures I included here are homemade rolls, Dal with Spiced Tomatoes and Potatoes, and Naan. Yummy! I really enjoy Indian food! In the near future I plan to host an Indian evening. I'm going to make Chicken Masala, Fresh Mint Chutney, and of course some Naan!

GJ

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TQ0AF2ugPmI/AAAAAAAAALg/rf3hcsTUPGE/s320/Independence%2BMonument%2BOverlook%2B1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552094016207601250" />
It's been two years since I've been to the town I grew up in. A little less than two years ago my parents moved. They didn't tell us that they were thinking about moving until they had purchased a home in another state. A few of us expressed a desire to make a last trip before my parents moved from our childhood home but it was strongly discouraged. Right now I really miss my hometown. For each question we answered correctly, we were given a bean. Later in the evening there was an auction in which we used the beans to bid. I probably had the least amount of beans. The auction began and the bids continued to increase significantly higher than my number of beans. I realized that those who had the most beans were the ones who were eager about biding. I decided that my best tactic considering the situation would be to wait until the amount of beans in the group had dwindled. I waited. We got to one item in which no one would bid. I bid one bean and the bid stopped there. I won with the least amount of beans!
In life it's so easy to become focused on material possessions. It's easy to become wrapped up in things that don't matter. What matters is that we make the most of what we have. It's amazing what Heavenly Father can help us accomplish with very little on our part!

Goals

When I was in high school, my scrawny brother decided that he no longer wanted to be picked on physically and emotionally for being small and chose to change his physique. He began to body build. One may ask "Why go to the opposite extreme?!" But it's what he wanted and he gave everything to attain his goal. During this period of his life he had pinned on his bedroom wall a quote attributed to Elder Richard G. Scott which read, "To reach a goal you have never attained, you must do things you have never before done." It's a beautiful concept! So often we desire to become better, to attain specific goals but would prefer that the success fall into our lap. Anything worth acquiring takes effort, lots of it!
For years I have wanted to lose weight. From time to time I put forth a little more effort and then I give up. Why?! I know that I won't attain my goal without valiant effort but it's so easy to give into complacency. Not any more! About two months ago I decided that my goal requires my complete effort. I have changed my tactic. I realized that any good goal is worthy of asking for heavenly assistance. So, I've done just that. For over two months I have fasted weekly for the heavenly assistance I need in reaching my goal. And I have made a stronger personal effort to do everything I know to live a healthier life. Not that it's been easy but it has been beautiful! I have seen the Lord's hand in my life. I have also recognized how the Adversary attempts to thwart my goals. And I have learned that through the Lord all things are possible. So, over half way to my goal I thank my Heavenly Father for His love, guidance, and direction!

The Holy Ghost

"There is a lesson in the Prophet Joseph Smith’s account of the First Vision which virtually every Latter-day Saint has had occasion to experience, or one day soon will. It is the plain and very sobering truth that before great moments, certainly before great spiritual moments, there can come adversity, opposition, and darkness. Life has some of those moments for us, and occasionally they come just as we are approaching an important decision or a significant step in our lives. . . Beware the temptation to retreat from a good thing. If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted in it, it is right now."
“Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence” by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

How profound! I think it is all too easy to receive a thought or impression and later (even moments later) dismiss it. It is so important that we do whatever is necessary to act upon promptings and impressions from the Spirit. I have had a few very impressionable experiences with the Spirit throughout my life which have helped create a spirit of obedience. One that currently stands out in my memory happened while I was a missionary. My companion and I were preparing for the next day. We had prayed to know where we should be so that we might be where the Lord needed us, his servants. As we discussing the streets in our area, I had a distinct impression not to be in a certain area, at a certain time. The impression was quite strong but could have been easily dismissed as an unrealistic thought. I told my companion of the impression and that we couldn't not go to that area. The next evening we spoke with a friend who lived in the area I had felt impressed to not enter. At the exact time that the Spirit told me we shouldn't not be there, there was an attempted kidnapping at gunpoint of an adult woman. There was no doubt that the Lord had protected us and I knew that if I had dismissed the prompting as my own crazy thought that our lives would have been in jeopardy! I was so grateful that I had listened to the prompting from the Holy Ghost! I learned to seek the Lord's guidance more in my life and realized how easy it is to dismiss promptings of the Spirit! Heavenly Father knows what He is doing! He tries to guide us in all important decisions in our lives!

Just a Thought

I've been thinking a lot about choices. Adam and Eve provide a great example: they made no progress until they partook of the fruit of which they were disinclined to partake. They may have thought that they were happy, and may have been afraid of what they were getting themselves into, but they were stuck and could not progress. Until they partook, they could not move forward with their lives. They could not experience true joy and happiness without taking a leap of faith.
Here is also an awesome quote from Elder Marion G. Romney:
"While the Lord will magnify us in both subtle and dramatic ways, he can only guide our footsteps when we move our feet. Ultimately, our own actions determine our blessings - or lack of them."

Any Righteous Thing is Possible!

As I was preparing to teach Relief Society I was reminded of this quote:
You can change! You can be anything you want to be in righteousness. If there is one lament I cannot abide, it is the poor, pitiful, withered cry, “Well, that’s just the way I am.” If you want to talk about discouragement, that is one that discourages me. I’ve heard it from too many people who want to sin and call it psychology. And I use the word sin to cover a vast range of habits, some seemingly innocent enough, that nevertheless bring discouragement and doubt and despair. You can change anything you want to change, and you can do it very fast. Another satanic sucker punch is that it takes years and years and eons of eternity to repent. That’s just not true. It takes exactly as long to repent as it takes you to say. “I’ll change”—and mean it. Of course there will be problems to work out and restitutions to make. You may well spend—indeed, you had better spend—the rest of your life proving your repentance by its permanence. But change, growth, renewal, and repentance can come for you as instantaneously as they did for Alma and the sons of Mosiah. Even if you have serious amends to make, it is not likely that you would qualify for the term “the vilest of sinners,” which is the phrase Mormon used in describing these young men. Yet as Alma recounts his own experience, it appears to have been as instantaneous as it was stunning. (See Alma 36.) Do not misunderstand. Repentance is not easy or painless or convenient. It is a bitter cup from hell. But only Satan, who dwells there, would have you think that a necessary and required acknowledgment is more distasteful than permanent residence. Only he would say, “You can’t change. You won’t change. It’s too long and too hard to change. Give up. Give in. Don’t repent. You are just the way you are.” That is a lie born of desperation. Don’t fall for it. (Jeffrey R. Holland. However Long and Hard the Road [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1985], 6-7.)
I love it! Through Jesus Christ we can accomplish anything! We can become exactly who we want to be and who the Lord knows we can become!

Miracles Happen, As Weird As They May Be

Not that long ago I wrote about unspoken prayers. . . A few weeks ago I backed up into an air conditioning unit and scratched my bumper. I was really upset because I feel like my car is still brand new and it was my first scratch. I told a few people that I hoped I would be rear-ended (just gently) so I could get a new bumper without paying for it. Tonight, as I was driving home from the temple, a lady plowed into me while I was stopped at a red light. I'm still a little in shock! My immediate thought was that Heavenly Father was giving me exactly what I wanted. While my bumper isn't that big of a deal, it means something to me. I care about my car. And as trivial as it may be, I feel like Heavenly Father was telling me that he cares about me. We never know how are prayers will be answered but they will be. Heavenly Father loves us and wants to bless us in anyway that He can.

Despised and Rejected

"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
Isaiah 53:3-5
As I read these verses today I had a profound thought (actually I'm sure it wasn't mine). Jesus Christ, the Savior of all mankind, was not popular. He didn't minister in order to gain a following. His purpose and mission was fulfilled no matter who believed. So often we seek popularity through our actions. Why?! Jesus Christ, the best example we can follow, did not seek approval or change his mission in order to fit into a crowd. It's been incredible to recognize the Lord's hand in my life. I frequently pray to follow the Lord's will and I pray for righteous desires. Sometimes I become frustrated when the things I desire most aren't happening. I wonder why, why can't I have righteous desires? But then things which mean something to me, but I hadn't asked for, are granted quite miraculously to me. Heavenly Father knows us and loves us! He knows what is most important and will guide us to it! I've always enjoyed the words to Garth Brooks "Unanswered Prayers." Here is the chorus:
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Moses

I've been thinking a lot about Moses. He was a prophet of God. As prophet, he saw God face to face. What a remarkable spiritual experience! In addition to seeing God, he saw this world and all those who have or will inhabit it. After this amazing experience the Adversary came temping Moses. Initially Moses was able to withstand the temptations because he remembered the vision and the power of God. But after Satan continues to tempt him, "Moses began to fear exceedingly; and as he began to fear, he saw the bitterness of hell" (Moses 1:20). Only when Moses began to listen to the Adversary did he see the bitterness of hell.
Each of us experience miracles. Through these we are able to see the power of God in our own lives. We are strengthened and edified but just as Moses, the Adversary will try to tempt us. He wants us to fall and will do all in his power to make it happen. The Adversary doesn't want us to have eternal happiness. I like what Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said in his talk entitled "Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence." He said, "If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now. Don't give up when the pressure mounts. Certainly don't give in to that being who is bent on the destruction of your happiness. Face your doubts. Master your fears. 'Cast not away therefore your confidence.' Stay the course and see the beauty of life unfold for you."

Light

Sadly my calla lily died. Cause of death: lack of light.
We are just like my calla lily. We need light. We need light from the sun. Sunlight provides vitamin D which aids in the absorption of calcium, improves the immune system, and reduces stress.
We also need the light from our Savior Jesus Christ. He said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Thanks to our Savior, the Light of the World, we do not have to walk in darkness. He can and does shed light upon our lives. He guides and directs us. We are not without hope, thanks to Him.

Priesthood Power

I taught a lesson on the priesthood, or the authority of God given to man to act in His name. My preparation for the lesson was edifying. It caused me to think of my own experiences with the priesthood power. I am incredibly grateful for the priesthood in my life. I have been blessed by its power. Oftentimes I feel a very direct love from my Heavenly Father through the priesthood. In a talk given by Elder Dallin H. Oaks he says, "As a boy and as a man I have seen healings as miraculous as any recorded in the scriptures, and so have many of you." The power of God is real! Miracles can and do happen!
As I was preparing, 1 Corinthians 11:11 kept entering my mind. The verse may seem unrelated to the priesthood authority but I couldn't help but think how much we need each other! Equally as good is Genesis 2:18. I love the scriptures! I love the word of God! There is so much to be gained!

Sweet potatoes

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/THBGPgMI14I/AAAAAAAAAK0/A6fxIDW0tXc/s320/IMGP3813.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507979576426944386" />
In an effort to be healthier, I have significantly decreased my sugar and salt consumption. I love both in pie form, however that doesn't help me in avoiding sugar:) My favorite form of sweet potatoes has become my own sweet potato chips. I sliver the sweet potato, place them on a cookie sheet, lightly spray with vegetable oil (Pam), sprinkle with spices, and bake. It was terrifying for a few reasons. Our lives were threatened. After the robbery, the thief had the key to our apartment and had watched us exit so it was possible that he would return while we were there. The most terrifying part for my friend was the triggered memories of abuse. It was a challenging time. It was a time to rely on the Lord. We found solace in the hymn "How Firm a Foundation."
I was sitting by a friend at church today who is going through a large trial. We sang "How Firm a Foundation" and once again I was touched by the words and doctrine within this hymn:
"Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not thee o'erflow,
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply.
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no never, no never forsake!"

Trials will always be apart of life. There is no need to fear! Heavenly Father gives us strength to overcome. The Adversary is the only one who wants us to become discouraged and give up. We become strengthened through our trials. When we rely on Jesus Christ we gain strength and wisdom and come closer to the ultimate goal, eternal life.

Greenhouse

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TGSu4GkcsMI/AAAAAAAAAKk/OwEnXH5MFvw/s320/IMGP3805.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504716923412984002" />
My calla lily bulb never grew. So, I made a trip to the local nursery for an already growing calla lily. I ended up buying the only calla lily left. My bulb was supposed to be a red calla lily. It would have looked awesome with my red and brown color scheme in my room but alas the calla lily I purchased is white. I'm still super excited! It has a white spotted leaf which will look really awesome when the calla lilies bloom!
This past weekend I was spent some time with my dad. I found out that when he was young, his favorite flower was the calla lily. How cool that, at least for some time, my dad and I shared a favorite flower?!
Anyway, I never thought I was one for gardens. I appreciate beautiful gardens but was never interested in devoting much time to cultivating plants. A few years ago I decided that I wanted a plant. I've always liked the idea of having green draping plants hanging over bookshelves. So, I bought a plant which would make my library complete.
A few years later, I have four plants! My bedroom is going to become a greenhouse!

8/9/10

I realized at work that it is 8/9/10! I love numbers! I'm not a mathematician by any stretch of the imagination but I'm fascinated with number sequences, even numbers, and my favorite number (8). Eight became my favorite number around the age of 6 or 7 when I began looking forward to being baptized. Eight doubled is sixteen which is the date of my birth. Eighty eight was the number of the house I lived in until seven years of age. Eight is the last number of my current address. My license plate begins with the number 8. And it goes on and on. . . I love numbers!

Calla Lilies

About a month and a half ago I saw potted calla lilies at the grocery store. I was extremely tempted to buy one. Calla lilies are my favorite flower. A few days later I discovered a really cute pot which came with potting soil and a calla lily bulb for the same price as the potted calla lily at the grocery store. I was super excited! I purchased the cute pot and planted my bulb. I read up on care of calla lilies. According to the sources I read, caring for a calla lily is quite easy. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. It's been about 6 weeks and my bulb hasn't sprouted! I can't wait until it sprouts! It will be beautiful and will add a lovely accent to my decor! :)

My Dresser

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2Rqsjn5ezJs/TGCg5vTxvHI/AAAAAAAAAKc/E3EEfcYEPr4/s320/IMGP3417.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503575658459151474" />
I never thought I would say this but it is fun to be poor! Years ago I remember telling my dad that I wanted to be wealthy enough that I would never have to worry about money. He basically told me that it wasn't a realistic expectation and that the majority of people worry about finances.
Because of a large move and big changes in my life I have been really strapped monetarily. And I must admit I'm rather enjoying myself! My new living arrangement is rather small. Because of the size I need to be very efficient with my space. Since moving I've wanted to get a dresser. I've been perusing furniture stores, thrift stores, and garage sales for a few weeks. Every item I saw in thrift stores just looked nasty. Today I finally found the perfect dresser! Perfect in price: $35 (including tax)!!! Now one may not look at this dresser and think it looks perfect. It's pressed wood. It isn't stained, painted, or anything else. It's just plain and simple! There is nothing fancy about it! But this is the best part of all! When I saw this dresser it was kind of like seeing an incredible piece of fabric that you can't help but envision making into the perfect article of clothing! My creative juices began flowing. It's enthralling!
I'm so excited for my next project, my dresser! By the time I'm finished with it, it will look awesome! Well, hopefully it will! This is going to be my first furniture project so we'll see how it goes. But in my mind, this dresser is going to be incredible!

Patience

I think patience has always been a weakness of mine. I have always been one when told to jump, asks how high. Whenever I feel impressed to do something, I do it immediately. It has become a strength and a weakness. The weakness comes because I act so quickly, I expect others to do the same (including Heavenly Father). But the reality is things rarely happen when or how I want them to. A recent struggle has consisted of my patience being tested yet again. It's very difficult for me! I question a lot. I'm desperately working on becoming more patient and understanding, even when understanding is impossible in the present. Something which has helped me emensely is a talk by Pres. Dieter Uchtdorf given in the April 2010 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are MANY things he said which have helped me in my quest. One of which is this, "The children of Israel waited 40 years in the wilderness before they could enter the promised land. Jacob waited 7 long years for Rachel. The Jews waited 70 years in Babylon before they could return to rebuild the temple. The Nephites waited for a sign of Christ’s birth, even knowing that if the sign did not come, they would perish. Joseph Smith’s trials in Liberty Jail caused even the prophet of God to wonder, 'How long?' In each case, Heavenly Father had a purpose in requiring that His children wait." It gives me hope to know that people, even prophets have struggled through trials and wondered when it would end. It gives me hope that I can become a better person, as they did. I know in whom I trust!

Perfect- Baille and the Boys

I don't want half hearted love affairs
I need someone who really cares
Life is too short to play silly games
I promised myself I won't do that again

It's got to be-e-e-e perfect
It's got to be-e-e-e worth it
Too many people take second best but I won't take anything less
It's got to b-e-e-e perfect
Young hearts are foolish they make such mistakes
They're much too eager to give their love away
Well, I have been foolish too many times
And now I'm determined I'm gonna get it right

I came across this song on a recent road trip. The past five weeks have been pure agony! I had no idea how much it would hurt! I knew that I loved him. I knew that I loved him back in August when he told me that he may not return to the city we were living in, and I was crushed. At that moment I knew that I cared for him more deeply than I had realized. I knew that he had truly become part of my life; he had changed it forever.
This evening I went to a friend's wedding reception. It was eye-opening experience. I saw two couples, who in my mind, had completely different marriages. One couple was together because the other person 'fit the bill.' They each had the qualities the other desired and the timing seemed to work. They appeared to be living two parallel lives. They will lead content lives, helping the other to accomplish their life's goals and hopefully they will become interconnected along the path.
The comparison couple fell in love 'on accident.' They weren't looking for each other. They weren't what they had in mind for an eternal companion. But they came together because of love and in the process realized they didn't want to be without the other. They are madly in love in a way that is beautiful, healthy, and inspiring! I want that! I want to be in a relationship where we both adore the other. Where we have no greater desire than to share life's trials and joys together. I want true love, not just a 'we can make this work' relationship.

The Lord Is My Light

The Lord is my light; Tho clouds may arise,
Faith, stronger than sight, looks up thru the skies

Where Jesus forever in glory doth reign.

Then how can I ever in darkness remain?

The Lord is my light; the Lord is my strength.

I know in his might I'll conquer at length.

My weakness in mercy he covers with pow'r,

And, walking by faith, I am blest ev'ry hour.

Jesus Christ is the bearer of all Light! I know that Heavenly Father, the One who has directed me, will provide a way.

Wishing and Hoping

I feel frustrated beyond belief! I am struggling to exhibit faith in Heavenly Father's plan for me. But it's hard! I feel that everything I desire and everything He has guided me to do hasn't happened. Why?! It was time to move on. This impression came as a surprise since when I moved here a year and a half ago, I fully intended on being here for at least 5 years. My life here has been very good and I wasn't looking for a change. However, when promptings come, it's important to heed them!
For a month, I prayed and fasted as to where I should move next. Ironically, while at work, the distinct prompting came that I needed to return to my last location. I knew this wasn't my own thought because I had no desire to return. I immediately began looking into jobs. Two months later, all that has transpired is one phone interview which didn't go that well. It is incredibly frustrating! I feel like I'm doing my very best to follow Heavenly Father's direction but nothing is coming from my effort. I prayed and fasted countless times seeking further guidance and direction. It's always difficult to step into the darkness, having faith that Heavenly Father will provide the way!
I have tried to show my faith through making the steps necessary to move, despite the lack of a job in my new location. Two weeks ago I began packing. This weekend my replacement for my housing contract moved in (yet I'm still here). Last night I received a mass email asking if anyone needed moving boxes. (I used all those I had and need more boxes.) As frustrating as my situation is, I felt that this man's offer to give boxes was a tender mercy of the Lord! I know that Heavenly Father is mindful of me, my situation, and my frustrations. He doesn't want me to lose hope. So, he gives me small reminders that He is apart of my life. I know He loves me!

Regret

I was among friends this afternoon. I searched the aisles. To my dismay I discovered hundreds of birthday, congratulations, wedding, and thinking of you cards but very few good luck cards. The few which I could find weren't applicable for my situation. I was feeling frustrated and hopeless. Then from a distance, I saw a zebra print card. As I approached I noticed that it was a blank card and the black stripes were fuzzy. All three aspects of the card were perfect for the recipient and situation. I was thrilled I had found the "perfect" good luck card and was impressed that it was better than I could have planned.
The parable of the good luck card is parallel to my life. . . Even though my life is in a bit of disarray right now I have hope that it will turn out better than I can plan. Heavenly Father is in charge. And as I make the effort to walk up and down the aisles I will find the "perfect" life, or at least one better than I could have planned.

The secret to success

I've decided that the secret to success is delayed gratification. It may sound a little odd but everything we want is within our reach, if we are patient. When I was in high school, there were a few wealthy businessmen coming into town to meet with my dad. I asked my dad where he was going to take the businessmen for lunch. He said that they were going to Burger King because they had $.99 Whoopers. I told him that it was inappropriate to try and win over businessmen at Burger King. My dad asked, "How do you think they became wealthy? They save their money." Being a teenager, I couldn't understand the concept of saving.
Delayed gratification helps in tempering one's self. People who feel entitled are going no where. I see many people who want the newest gadget, car, home, clothes, etc. immediately. They are constantly in pursuit of the best in the moment. This pursuit will get you no where. There will always be something else to want. There will always be something new.
I work with people from a variety of economic backgrounds. It's interesting that in general, the people who make the least have the I phones and buy their lunch everyday. Those who make significantly more aren't worried about "keeping up with the Jones'." They bring their lunch, have the old cell phones, and old cars. They aren't concerned about appearances. I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't care at all about material goods. There is some fun that comes from things but I think the balance comes in patience in the pursuit.

Good days

What causes us to believe it is going to be a good or bad day? Many times we make this assumption before anything significant has happened in the day. . . This morning I stopped at a gas station on my way to work. Over the loud speaker was John Denver. I don't hear John Denver very often and it made me think of home. At that moment I decided that it was going to be a good day. A few minutes later when I arrived at work, I found a good parking spot. Wow! How could my day get any better?! The rest of my day went well probably because I chose to have a good day.
Shouldn't we choose to have good days every day?! They range from natural disasters, disease, political strife, and general decay of society. I would go as far to say that many of the problems could be prevented through discipline. Discipline should not be misinterpreted as forced coercion. Discipline comes from within. It comes from one with insight and perspective. Discipline requires looking beyond natural, momentary desires. Discipline or a lack thereof, effects all aspects of our lives. When discipline is part of our lives we are healthier and happier because we have greater control over the body which Heavenly Father blessed us with. A lack of discipline creates exactly the opposite effect in our lives. It seems so easy to choose. We have a choice between eternal happiness or eternal damnation. Which will it be?! Discipline isn't easy but Christ showed us the perfect way! He has experienced more temptation than any of us; He never fell. He developed discipline through always standing firm to Heavenly Father's laws. Eternal laws are there to bless us, so why not follow?! Yes, we will fall. But that is why Christ suffered for our sins. But that is not reason to give up; it is reason to try harder! It contained one of the best depictions of love, grief, pain, and joy. A quote from John Keats (in the movie) was "There's a holiness to the heart's affections." That rang true with me. There is something so powerful in love. There are feelings which are in-explainable. Those feelings can only be understood by someone who has also experienced them. The feelings are so deep that there does seem to be a holiness to them. It reaches a part of our soul that the only other person who can touch, is God.

Answered Prayers

I've been pondering many important decisions. Many things are up in the air with regards to my future. I try to look at the decisions with perspective of my priorities. Everything we choose in life is evidence of priority. The ultimate question is: what is best? There are so many good things in life but what is ultimately the best decision? What decisions will affect eternal consequences? Sometimes decisions seem to be daunting and eternal although they aren't.
My ultimate dream is to be an inspiring wife and mother. But what decisions will lead me up that path? I become so encompassed with daily decisions some of which matter more than others. It is ultimately Heavenly Father who can help us know which decisions need extra effort, or are more important. And it is in making those decisions that we are led on a divine path.
I'm in the midst of making some potentially eternal decisions. . . I suppose all decisions are eternal because every choice leads us to our future. But I'm pondering a few choices which could affect my eternal destination. . . I'm so grateful for family, friends and a loving Heavenly Father who guide me. This week has been phenomenal with regards to receiving inspiration and guidance. Whenever the stars seem to align and I feel Heavenly Father's guiding hand I feel of His love. I realize in these moments that He cares about me and my eternal destiny. He loves me, my family, and my posterity. And He will do all in His power to help me return to Him. I'm grateful for His involvement in my life.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love to cook; I especially love to bake! For the past few months I've been looking for the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie recipe. For a few years I thought I was in possession of the "perfect" recipe I am now in search of. From my perspective, the "perfect" cookie is soft, a little poofy, but not cakey. I've been experimenting with recipes, oven temperatures, cooking time, and baking sheets. I have yet to find the "perfect" cookie but in the process realized that the "perfect" cookie requires balance. The ingredients, oven, temperature, and cooking time all affect the final product.
In our lives, balance is just as important. So often I have noticed in my own life and in the lives of my friends, an unequivocal imbalance. I think it's human nature to focus on one thing at a time. But why?! In different periods of my life I have been focused on school, career, family, or a social life. I have found times when I lean more to works or faith.
There are extremes in anything. Extreme diets end in unhealthy eating habits, potentially binging. Extreme perspectives in political agendas may help to initiate change but once the goal is obtained, pushes the agenda further than originally desired. Even devoting all of one's time to the church negates the responsibility of family and community. Extremes aren't healthy. I have most recently seen the effects of extreme beliefs and actions have on the unhealthy lifestyle of the individual. The sad reality is that once we become extreme in mindset, it is difficult to accept or view reality. We become enveloped in beliefs which isolate us from the norm.
Even in the small things it is important to maintain balance. The most important thing in my life is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Christ was a balanced leader. He is my exemplar! In order to maintain balance I need to begin each day by acknowledging His influence in my life. And in the process He can help me to balance family, friends, career, education, community, and church.

Cars, decisions, and a seal of approval

A week and a half ago my transmission went out. I was a bit surprised since it was only three years ago that it was replaced. I was frustrated and unprepared to buy a new car. I tried to move forward by illiciting the help of my father. He immediately gave me suggestions. It was perfect timing because he was researching various vehicles and was extremely helpful. The vehicle highest on his list caught my attention. My dad felt that it was the best deal and I felt good about it. I was excited and I felt I had Heavenly Father's seal of approval.
Considering this was the biggest purchase thus far in my life I felt determined to look into all my options before making the purchase. I looked into other makes and models. I researched online and test drove various cars at dealerships. I sought personal knowledge. I wanted to feel like I had made the decision, not others.
In the meantime, the "perfect" car was sold to a quicker buyer. And I found a different car. The car I'm buying is good. It meets my needs. But it doesn't excite me as the first car did. Through this experience I realized that sometimes large decisions come when we least expect. We can find ourselves feeling unprepared to make the decision. However, when we have Heavenly Father's "seal of approval" we need to accept his will and move forward in faith. If I had done this with my car I would have the "perfect" car. I would have something that made me excited and not just meet my basic needs. However, I'm grateful to have learned this lesson when all that is at stake is a car and not my eternal happiness. Heavenly Father loves me and He will not lead me astray. I do not need to know all of the options when I'm making decisions. All I need to know is what Heavenly Father wants me to do!

Out of the mouths of babes

Last night my little sister called. She left home for college a year ago. When she arrived at college she planned to become an interior designer. She was dedicated and determined. But to no avail; she wasn't accepted into the program. I was surprised when she took the news in stride. She was calm and ready to move on. Her plan for the summer was to work and save money for school. However, despite her efforts she hasn't been able to obtain a job. She never gave up. She continued to apply for menial jobs. She was willing to accept pretty much anything. Her summer is almost over and nothing happened as she desired. I was shocked and impressed when my little sister explained to me that she has learned so much from her experiences over the past year. She said that she used to want things to happen her way, now she realizes that Heavenly Father will take care of her and that she doesn't need to worry about it. My baby sister is confident in Heavenly Father's plan; what an example! I'm appreciative to the strong people in my life. My sister is an incredible example to me!

Curling with a flat iron

Years ago a friend attempted to teach me to curl my hair with a flat iron. I really liked the result of curling with the flat iron vs. the curling iron. I had the desire to learn! I tried over and over to learn this technique. I even solicited the help of other teachers; maybe someone else's take on the technique would click a little easier in my mind. But alas, I couldn't grasp it! I practiced and practiced but to no avail.
Then this week I had a little extra time, and once again the desire to curl my hair with a flat iron, so I tried. It worked! What changed? Not the movements, but the force of the movements. In the past I had pulled the hair tight from the flat iron because I felt that it would curl more tightly. I was wrong! The tighter I pulled, the more my hair refused to do what I wanted.
The same can be true of life. . . the more we try to force the future, the more we don't get the results we desire. With patience and a soft hand, we can accomplish the very results we desire.

The Beauty of Knowing

How does one thank people who do more for us than we can even comprehend?! I appreciate good music and people who create good music.

What more can ye ask?!

I can't help but be in awe of the price Jesus Christ paid for you and me! I've been pondering the depth and breadth of this incredible gift. Although, at least in this life, I will never understand the full implications, I'm deeply grateful for a gift that only Christ could give.
Jeffrey R. Holland said, "Because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. . . We will never be left alone nor unaided, even if sometimes we may feel that we are. Truly the Redeemer of us all said: 'I will not leave you comfortless: [My Father and] I will come to you [and abide with you].' "
The Savior of the world can provide comfort and peace unlike any other source. I have made crepes twice in the past week. They are so divine! They are sweet but not too sweet for a nice breakfast. Crepes bring my heart to home and all that's divine.
I became quite sick about a week ago and it granted me the opportunity to see that my friends are nigh unto perfect. A few friends made me dinner and provided companionship when I wasn't able to leave my house. Wow! What more can you ask for?!
Three days from now I will be on my way to the annual family campout! This is one event that I dearly look forward to each year! I have many fond memories of playing cards with my cousins, hiking, warming water to wash our faces, walking to the bathroom with a flashlight, roasting marshmellows over the campfire, etc. I eagerly anticipate the reunion!
Since I've been unable to work the past few days I've realized how much I love my job! I have the opportunity to work with children in need; what job could be more perfect? And my co-workers are a second family; we are united in purpose and love each other!

Puzzle pieces

"She’s everything I’m not. She’s my other half. Without her I’m not whole. The thing about meeting your other half is, is you’re walking around, you think that you’re happy, right? You think that you’re whole, then realize you ain’t dirt without her, then you can’t go back to being just a half ‘cause now you know what it’s like to be a whole, ya know what I mean?"
-Ashton Kutcher in Guess Who

Lately I've been thinking about what makes two people compatible. . . is it two similar people who are connected through their commonalities or is it complete opposites who connect like puzzle pieces? I recently talked with a friend and asked him for his thoughts on the subject. He cited a book he read which suggested that we are best with those who are similar to ourselves. If we are similar we have less to learn about our significant other. We supposedly understand them and where they come from.
The more I think about it, marriage has many facets. One of the purposes is to become better together. Men and women are inherently different. We learn from each other because of our differences.
I used to be interested in men who had many qualities in common with me. However, lately I've realized that a man who is very different from myself brings so much more to the table. :) I have so much more to learn from a man who is so different than me.

Love and Temples

Today I was in the presence of the Spirit and felt the overwhelming love Heavenly Father has for me. It couldn't have come at a better time! Lately I have felt burdened with thoughts of self doubt. I question my ability, intelligence, and beauty. But feelings of self doubt tend to dissipate when you feel love. Love conquers all!

The other day I was in a religion class where we were discussing 1 Corinthians. We read:
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." (3:16-17)
These verses really hit me! Heavenly Father loves His temples! He expects us to respect His temples. If our bodies are temples, Heavenly Father expects us to respect our bodies as well! I'm the first to admit, I'm not always the best at trusting and believing in Heavenly Father's plan. With each experience comes new perspective. I've gained a greater appreciation for patience, not that I've mastered the virtue. Only a year ago I was eager to change my surroundings. I was frustrated a few months later when it didn't seem to be working as fast as I would like. However, things turned out extremely well! I look back at many of the trying times of my life and realize that if I were just patient things would have passed and I would have been happier during the "trial."
Once again, I find myself going through a particular problem. I realized that every trial passes and if I'm patient during the trial, the time seems to fly.
It's impossible for me to know how my life will turn out. I've faced challenges in my professional and personal life. The challenges I've faced have helped me to become aware of my own growth and abilities. I have come to believe that it is through challenges that we are able to become and accomplish more. When faced with challenges we are "forced" to look deeper within our own capabilities and to rely more on the strength of loved ones. It is difficult to accomplish much in this life while just relying on one's own ability! The most important person to rely on is Heavenly Father. We can also gain strength from family and friends. I'm grateful for wonderful family and friends who are supportive.

Serendipitous!

Do you ever feel that decisions you make aren't what you would have preferred? A few months ago I was presented with a job opportunity. It was a great offer but I didn't want to accept. I talked it over with a few friends. One friend in particular thought I was stupid to pass up the opportunity. So, in faith I took the job. I was scared out of mind as I was preparing for the move. Now, I've been at the job for two weeks and I love it!!! Yes, I'm still a little scared but it's the good scared feeling (if that makes sense).
Throughout this experience I can't help but think how Heavenly Father has His hand in my life! I feel protected. I feel loved! I know that He knows what is best for me, even when I do not. He has my best interest in mind. He knows what needs to happen in my life to prepare me for my future. It's amazing how small occurrences from the past have prepared me for the present.
I'm so grateful for Heavenly Father's plan! It is better than my plan!

French Toast

This morning I went to the grocery store to pick up a few miscellaneous items. And lo and behold, the grocery store employees were cooking french toast for all of the customers. I couldn't believe it! I love french toast! It is arguably my favorite breakfast item. So, I got in line, dished up some french toast, and sat down at one of the tables. I found myself surrounded by young families. There were adorable kids abounding. Being there reminded me of the many blogs I've seen written by mothers that include pictures of their kids at various events. I thought how fun it would be to take pictures at the french toast breakfast but quickly realized that unlike the blogging mothers my pictures wouldn't be as fun. I don't have small kids, which greatly improve any picture.

Love

Why do we take people for granted?! This is not a confession. I feel like I appreciate and express that appreciation to those I love and admire. But I guess the best way to find out if that is true would be to ask those I love.
The reason why the above question is on my mind is a few people I love have recently had some scary encounters with death, or at least reminders of the inevitable. One, a friend and her husband got in a motorcycle accident. (Authors note: I hate motorcycles! I believe that motorcycles increase your chance of dying more than almost any other form of entertainment or transportation.) My friend survived the accident but definitely isn't in the best of shape. Second, my dad ended up in the ER because he had a spell of amnesia which caused him to forget the major things he is doing in his life. I'm not a doctor but this incident led me to believe that there could be two problems: a tumor or a stroke. Neither option left much to hope for. Third, a friends' husband was just notified that he will be deployed to Iraq in a few months. Wow! Three reminders of the shortness of life within a two week period was enough to initiate the thought process.
Life is amazing! I'm grateful to have been born into such a wonderful family. I also have supportive and loving friends! However, I believe that it's sad that it takes scary incidents or poignant movies/books to remind us of the frailty of life. It is important to appreciate and more importantly, to express that appreciation to those you love! I love you!

Why?!

I'm struggling to sleep right now because a tornado of thoughts is wreaking havoc on my mind. I have a lot of decisions to make in the short months ahead. How does anyone make large decisions?! And what do you do when the things you want to happen don't work out?! (Or at least it seems that way right now.) My dreams seem unreachable. I'm looking for change but can't seem to find it. Change should be easy to find, right? Why do I find it difficult to obtain? They always say change is the only constant. Why isn't it a constant in my life?! Despite all effort on my part I can't seem to change anything! . . .
